CROWNS AND VENEERS AT FITZ PARK DENTAL PRACTICE

For various reasons such as discolouration or physical damage, you may wish to have a veneer fitted. A veneer is a thin layer of porcelain which is able to fit over the front of the tooth to change its colour, shape or position.

At Fitz Park Dental Practice, we will guide you in choosing the right colour to improve a single discoloured tooth or to lighten the front teeth.

A veneer makes a chipped tooth look whole again by covering the entirety of the tooth with a thicker section in place of the broken part. Veneers are suitable for teeth that:

  • Have spaces between them
  • Are chipped
  • Suffer from staining
  • Are poorly shaped or crooked

It will take two visits to Fitz Park Dental Practice to fit a veneer. During the first, we will prepare the tooth and ensure we have the correct shade, and during the second visit we will fit the veneer. To ensure your satisfaction, we will show you the veneer in place before it is bonded in place.

As well as veneers, Fitz Park Dental Practice also offers crowns (sometimes referred to as caps). Crowns are the ideal way of restoring teeth which have been broken or weakened by decay or by an especially large filling.

Crowns completely cover a tooth, strengthening it and restoring its previous shape and appearance. Crowns are also able to hold dental bridges in place, cover dental implants or cover teeth than have had a root canal procedure.

Crowns can be made of a variety of different materials and new materials are continually being introduced. Some of the most popular options are listed below.

  • Porcelain bonded to precious metal: this is what many crowns are made from. A precious metal base is made and then porcelain is applied in layers over it.
  • All-ceramic: this modern technique offers a metal-free alternative, which can give the strength of a bonded crown and the appearance of a porcelain crown. Therefore it is suitable for use in all areas of the mouth.
  • Gold-alloy crowns: gold is one of the oldest filling materials. Today it is used with other metal alloys to increase its strength, which makes it very hardwearing. These crowns are silver or gold in colour.

After an initial consultation with Dr Simon Welch, it will normally take two visits to Fitz Park Dental Practice to fit the crown. Firstly, we prepare the tooth so it is the required shape for the crown. Once it is shaped, we will make a mould of the prepared tooth and the jaw, so we can record the way you bite together. The mould (impression) is then given to a dental technician who will take between one and two weeks to make the crown.
