FITZ PARK DENTAL PRACTICE FAQs
Below are a small selection of the most frequently asked questions at our practice. Please feel free to contact us if you require further clarification before your visit or a simply a reassuring chat.
WHAT IS TOOTH WHITENING?
Tooth whitening can be a very effective way of lightening the natural colour of your teeth without removing any of the tooth surface or damaging it. Usually the original shade of the tooth is whitened to a lighter colour, rather than being turned completely white.
WHAT ARE DENTAL IMPLANTS?
A dental implant is used to support one or more false teeth. It is a titanium screw that can replace the root of a tooth when it fails. Just like a tooth root, it is placed into the jawbone.
WHAT IS DENTAL OCCLUSION?
Dental occlusion is another name for the way your teeth meet when your jaws bite together.
WHAT IS TMJ?
The letters TMJ are short for of ‘temporo-mandibular joint’, which is the joint connecting your lower jaw and your skull. The movement in this joint lets you open and close your mouth and chew from side to side.
WHAT IS COSMETIC DENTISTRY?
WHY AM I AFRAID OF THE DENTIST?
Being ‘afraid of the dentist’ may mean different things to different people. It will probably help if you work out just what it is that worries you most. Maybe the sounds and smells bring back memories of bad experiences as a child, or the thought that having treatment will hurt. The good news is that more and more dentists now understand their patients’ fears, and with a combination of kindness and gentleness can do a great deal to make dental treatment an acceptable, normal part of life.
WHAT IS A ROOT CANAL TREATMENT?
Root canal treatment (also called endodontics) is needed when the blood or nerve supply of the tooth (known as the pulp) is infected through decay or injury. You may not feel any pain in the early stages of the infection. In some cases, your tooth could darken in colour, which may mean that the nerve of the tooth has died (or is dying). This would need root canal treatment.
WHAT IS ORTHODONTIC TREATMENT?
Orthodontic treatment is a way of straightening or moving teeth, to improve the appearance of the teeth and how they work. It can also help to look after the long-term health of the teeth, gums and jaw joints, by spreading the biting pressure over all the teeth.
WHY DO I NEED AN X-RAY?
Early tooth decay does not tend to show many physical signs. Sometimes the tooth looks healthy, but your dentist will be able to see from an x-ray (radiograph) whether you have any decay present under the enamel, any possible infections in the roots, or any bone loss around the tooth. X-rays can help the dentist to see in between your teeth or under the edge of your fillings. Finding and treating dental problems at an early stage can save both time and money. In children, x-rays can be used to show where the second teeth are and when they will come through. This also applies to adults when the wisdom teeth start to come through.

Excellent service and standards as usual with a reassuring team having been a patient of Simon's for a number of years.
I have been attending the Fitz Park Practice for several years now and have yet to have cause for complaint. I am presently going through the process of having an implant. At every stage Simon has carefully explained what's happening in relation to the whole process. All seems to be going well. The hygienist I see is excellent, particularly as she gives me plenty of advice to help me care for my teeth. My one regret is that this didn't happen 40 years ago! In terms of recommendation the fact that my wife has recently transferred to the practice show how confident we are in the care provided.
Since moving to Keswick 14 years ago, my wife and I have had excellent dental advice, care and treatment. Simon has a very good team from, receptionist through to examination, hygienist and treatment and we always feel that they have an interest in what is in the best for the patient. Highly recommended.
Treatment this morning with Simon; as professional and caring as ever. The whole team are impressive in their efficiency and good humour - I cannot recommend them highly enough.
